As the climate crisis accelerates, European agriculture faces unprecedented challenges. Increasing droughts, extreme weather, and shifting seasonal patterns are putting crops under significant stress, making them more vulnerable to infections by pathogens. Traditional chemical pesticides, while effective in the short term, often come with environmental trade-offs and face growing regulatory scrutiny. In this context, innovative microbial solutions—biological products that harness beneficial microorganisms—are emerging as a sustainable and effective way to protect plant health and ensure the resilience of our food systems.

On July 16th, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:40 am CET, BIOVEXO will host a landmark online cluster webinar titled “Innovative Microbial Solutions for Plant Health – Development, Field Application, Regulatory Integration.” This event brings together leading experts from four major European projects—BIOVEXO, LIFE Resilience, BeXyl, and NextGenBioPest—to share the latest scientific advances, field experiences, and regulatory insights in the field of microbial biopesticides.

BIOVEXO: Biocontrol Innovations for Xylella Fastidiosa

At the heart of this cluster is the BIOVEXO project, a pioneering initiative dedicated to developing sustainable and economically viable plant protection solutions against Xylella fastidiosa, one of the most devastating plant pathogens threatening European olive and almond production. Xylella fastidiosa has wiped out groves in Italy and Spain and poses a growing risk across the Mediterranean. With no effective chemical pesticides available, BIOVEXO is demonstrating innovative biocontrol agents—natural microorganisms aiming to suppress the pathogen and its insect vectors. These solutions are being tested in real-world conditions to ensure they are both effective and practical for farmers, aiming to safeguard Europe’s agricultural heritage and promote environmentally friendly crop protection.

LIFE Resilience: Building Resistance and Sustainability in Mediterranean Agriculture

The LIFE Resilience project is another key player in the fight against plant pathogens. Its mission is to enhance the resilience of Mediterranean crops—especially olives and almonds—against Xylella fastidiosa and other threats. The project focuses on developing and validating agricultural practices that reduce the risk of infection, increase biodiversity, and promote soil health. LIFE Resilience’s objectives include identifying resistant crop varieties, optimizing irrigation and soil management, and implementing integrated pest management strategies. Through collaborative field trials and stakeholder engagement, the project is translating research into actionable solutions that can be adopted by farmers across the Mediterranean region.

BeXyl: Coordinating the European Response to Xylella

BeXyl is a European research project that coordinates efforts to monitor, prevent, and manage Xylella fastidiosa outbreaks. By fostering collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, BeXyl aims to improve early detection, trace the spread of the pathogen, and develop harmonized response strategies. The project’s integrated approach combines advanced diagnostics, risk modeling, and communication tools to support rapid and effective interventions, minimizing the impact of Xylella on European agriculture and ecosystems.

NextGenBioPest: The Next Generation of Biopesticides

NextGenBioPest is driving innovation in biopesticide development for some of the most challenging pests and pathogens affecting fruit and vegetable crops. The project’s specific objectives include creating new biological control agents, developing advanced diagnostic tools using IT and AI, and optimizing environmentally friendly RNA-based pesticides. NextGenBioPest also focuses on enhancing plant resistance, improving agronomic practices, and analyzing the social, economic, and environmental impacts of biopesticide adoption. By integrating these advances into novel Integrated Pest Management (IPM) concepts, the project aims to deliver practical, sustainable solutions for farmers and the broader agri-food sector.

Why This Cluster Webinar Matters

Bringing together these four ambitious projects in a single cluster webinar is a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange and scientific dialogue. Participants will gain firsthand insights into:

  • The latest advances in microbial biopesticide development, from laboratory innovation to field application.
  • Real-world challenges and best practices in implementing these solutions on farms, including lessons learned from field trials.
  • The complexities of regulatory integration in the EU, with a focus on ensuring that innovative microbial products can reach the market safely and efficiently.

The webinar will feature presentations, a panel discussion, and an interactive Q&A session, fostering a dynamic environment for researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and farmers to connect and collaborate. Whether you are involved in agricultural research, plant health management, or regulatory affairs, this event offers a valuable platform to stay ahead of the curve in sustainable plant protection.
